3.3 Page Template Concept: Content Editor

Conceptual Overview

A Page Template is a template for creating new Pages

Page Templates allow you to create new Pages with pre-added Components and Content Items, making it simple to build multiple Pages that share the same content – they are templates for rapidly building new Pages.

Page Templates look and feel like Pages except they can add special Components called Template Slots to their Page Layout. These Template Slots determine where a templated Page may slot in Components of its own.

Page Templates can also be used as a means to readily and consistently include script, style and other references across multiple Pages, such as may be required when using frameworks and libraries.

Conceptual Diagram

Page Templates are commonly used when Pages share the same header and footer. In this case, a Page Template is created with the header and footer Components added and its Content Items filled out. It is then used to create each new Page, which are all created with the same Components and Content Items.

Benefits

  • Build Pages more quickly

  • Manage content more easily

  • Standardise content

Understanding Page Templates

Pages built with templates have restricted editing conditions

It’s important to note that Pages created using a Page Template have stricter editing conditions than those created without: the Page Template’s Page Layout and Content Items cannot be modified, and Components cannot be directly added to the Head or Body sections of the Page Layout. Instead, Components can only be added to new layout sections representing the Template Slots.

Page Templates are the only way to reuse pre-populated content

Page Templates, like Pages, include an arrangement of Components whose Content Items have been authored, or filled out, and templated Pages inherit the same pre-populated Content Items.

This is the only way in Forrit One that Components and Content Items can be pre-packaged together for reuse across Pages. Component Templates do not come into the Page Editor with Content Items or filled Template Slots, so the same effect cannot be achieved.

Notes

Page Templates do not have any routing information.

Page Templates are displayed in the Page Tree under a Templates filter.

Page Templates cannot be used as Pages – they can only be used to create new Pages.
